Prof Meera Mehta, Associate Professor in Inorganic Chemistry

I attended a public school in Toronto, before going to McMaster university for a Honours BSc in Chemistry; graduating on the Dean’s List, and later moved to University of Toronto to undertake a PhD in Chemistry. After which, I was awarded a Royal Society Newton International Fellowship to undertake postdoctoral research at the University of Oxford. Subsequently, I moved to University of Manchester as a Lecturer in Inorganic Chemistry where I started my independent research team. After a few years in Manchester, I returned to Oxford as an Associate Professor in Inorganic Chemistry and Tutorial Fellow at Trinity College. My research group is interested in understanding fundamental synthetic inorganic chemistry and using what we learn to provide solutions to global issues. Currently, we are focused on developing sustainable element catalysts that recycle greenhouse gases into useful products. In my free time, I enjoy hiking with my dog and partner, and reading.

I’m in the 3rd year of my DPhil in theoretical chemistry supervised by David Manolopoulos. Previously, I completed a BSc and MSc in interdisciplinary sciences at ETH Zurich. My research in the Manolopoulos group is about methods to predict IR and UV/VIS spectra. Our research is done with pen and paper or with our supercomputers, so it’s quite different from our synthetic colleagues (and I honestly would not trust myself in a wet lab). When I’m not in the lab I like to row (which I learned here), to run, or to have movie nights with some baked treats.
